Bred by Yakima Chief Ranches, Ahtanum is named after the town where Charles Carpenter established the first hop farm in the Yakima Valley in 1869. Usually used as an aromatic hop, Ahtanum is known for giving off earthy, floral and citrus scents.

Ahtanum is typically used in Pale Ale recipes for the noted aromatic qualities but has also been used with success in a full boil adding a moderate bitterness.

Some possible substitutions include Cascade and Amarillo.

Ahtanum is known to be a low yielding variety but with high disease resistance.
